France is still reeling from the horror of Toulouse where Mohammed Merah went on a killing spree leaving seven people dead. And the world may approve of the swift justice that subsequently killed Merah himself. But the French people are still wondering how an unemployed panel beater on benefits managed to accumulate such a deadly arsenal under the (not so) watchful eye of the French intelligence service.
Despite France having some of the most stringent gun laws in the world, Merah managed to acquire ordnance that included a Kalashnikov assault rifle, an Uzi submachine pistol, a pump action shotgun and no less than three Colt handguns, one of which was a .357 Python, one of the most powerful handguns made. Naturally, they’re not readily available in the local gunshop in St Denis. Jean-Jacques Buigne, president of the Union Francaises des Amateurs d’Armes suggested that it was unlikely that Merah had a gun licence, going on to say that the country was ‘awash with illegal firearms’.
No question that the Toulouse murders were perpetrated by a dangerous fanatic using illegally obtained guns. A tragedy that could not have been prevented by making already strict gun laws more robust.
